The Transand Camp area is the first area of the Mossel Bay UISP where construction has been completed. A practical completion inspection was held on Friday 15 September 2023. Members of the contractor, municipal officials and members of the Zutari project team attended the event.
A total of 69 erven were constructed in the Transand Camp area, with proper municipal infrastructure and tarred roads. The households that lived in the Transand Camp informal settlement were temporarily relocated to the TRA facility that was constructed for the UISP project to make way for the construction of the serviced sites. The TRA facility also has storage units where the building materials were stored during the time that they lived in the TRA. Once the serviced sites were completed, the lucky beneficiaries were moved back to the area where they then received additional building material to enable them to reconstruct their homes on the serviced sites.
The Enhanced Serviced Sites that are being developed as part of the Mossel Bay UISP consist of full A-grade serviced sites with a toilet structure with a flushable toilet, an outside wash trough and an inside washbasin and tap. A grade services translate to paved roads, underground water and sewerage connected to the municipal grid, and proper stormwater drainage. Each erf has a level compacted platform ready for a top structure to be built on and in areas with slopes, retaining walls are used to create a level platform. In addition to this, each stand is provided with an electrical connection and pre-paid electricity meter that is rolled out through the electrification programme funded by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.
The quality of living of these households have been significantly improved. From where families had to walk far to get water or have access to toilets on dirt pathways with no proper drainage and no access to electricity, these families now have a safe living environment with access to water, electricity and each family have their own toilet.
